Flexenclosure supports Samoa Connectivity Project with two new cable landing stations

The Independent State of Samoa had always been dependent on satellite communications for its connection to the rest of the world.
And with satellite technology being both very expensive and relatively slow, it meant that the Pacific island nation’s residents and businesses were denied the benefits of high speed data communications that much of the rest of the globe’s population takes for granted.
However, change was coming as the government of Samoa commissioned Samoa Submarine Cable Company (SSCC) to build, manage and operate a new submarine cable – the country’s first direct fibre connection to the outside world.
At almost 1,500km long, the Tui-Samoa project would connect Apia in Samoa to Suva in Fiji, with spurs linking it to Wallis & Futuna and Vanua Levu, Fiji. Fast, reliable and affordable Internet services were on their way, services that would soon be stimulating ICT innovation, enabling economic growth and bridging the digital divide between the people of Samoa and its neighbouring island nations.
SSCC would need two cable landing stations ready and waiting at Apia and Tuasivi.
It was critical that the new facilities should be ready well before the cable arrived, so a very fast completion was mandated – a challenge that was made more difficult by the fact that the materials, tools and expertise required to build such a facility were completely unavailable locally.
Samoa’s position in the Pacific’s Ring of Fire – a 40,000km long region in which 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur – meant that the facilities would need to be built to withstand potentially devastating earthquakes.
And with the Pacific known for its extreme weather conditions, the new cable landing stations would also need to be able to withstand the worst weather that could be thrown at them in their coastal positions.
SSCC identified Flexenclosure’s eCentre cable landing station as the ideal solution:
Two eCentre modules were built – a 42sqm 25kW module to be located in Apia and a 21sqm 3kW module to be located in Tuasivi.
Flexenclosure prefabricated the eCentre cable landing stations at its factory in Sweden and then shipped them as fully integrated units to Samoa for final on site deployment.
The cable landing stations were designed to withstand seismic zone 4 activity as well as category 5 cyclones. Their C4 class corrosive coating will also protect them against the highly saline conditions at the sites.
Flexenclosure worked closely with the network equipment suppliers to optimise the facility’s limited footprint for them.
And on-target delivery meant that the project was delivered on-time and under budget.
The Flexenclosure Advantage
By working with Flexenclosure, SSCC was able to capitalise on a number of significant eCentre differentiators:
Flexenclosure is a specialist in prefabricated eCentre cable landing stations specifically for the submarine cable industry. They can be built to accommodate permanent staff or to be unmanned 24 x7 facilities.
Maximum preparation, configuration and testing of the cable landing stations in Flexenclosure’s factory in Sweden ensured the extreme level of quality and reliability required of these mission critical facilities before their delivery to Samoa.
The same team that built the eCentres in Sweden travelled to Samoa for their installation and final
commissioning, thus ensuring the precise attention to detail found in all eCentre facilities.
With eCentre’s modular construction, facilities can easily be expanded to accommodate additional subsea cables as they arrive, or networking and data equipment as traffic grows, all without interrupting on-going operations.
Flexenclosure’s unique prefabrication project management process enables a cable landing station to be designed, constructed, delivered and installed anywhere in the world very fast – typically less than six months after the order is placed.
And with extensive experience deploying prefabricated cable landing stations and data centres in some of the most remote and challenging environments worldwide, Flexenclosure is always able to bring creative ideas, fully tested solutions and total peace of mind.
